The good of a bad economy?

5k number two? Done!

My mom and I were at Macy’s today. She had seen this coat she had to have. I’ll have to admit it is pretty cute. Everything was on sale! Okay, everything but the DKNY jeans I wear… go figure. But I saw a cute down vest with a hood on it. A hood with fur on it. Totally trendy, I know. It was normally $69.00. It was 40% off and an extra 20% off with a Macy’s account. I told my mom about it and she asked me how much it was. My mom enjoys asking me how much things are after a discount because I don’t do math. But I figured it would be about $28ish dollars. I got it in black because black is practical and less trendy… She bought it and I would pay her next week. When she looked at the receipt it rang up at just over $16. As she dropped me back off in my driveway she told me to consider the vest a gift. Awww! Thanks mom.

Sweet Jesus! Macy’s is practically giving away clothing! 4 for the price of 1? Sweet. Like my mom said, the deals are pretty awesome right now, if you have the extra money to spend. And she does.

Almost free gas?

leave a comment »

Yesterday I bought gas. It was $3.19 per gallon. This was the cheapest I’d seen it in Seattle and it was at a 76, not something like Arco.
This morning I drove by the same station and it was $2.99. Holy fuck, if I knew you were gonna be practically giving it away… I would have waited a day.
A 20 cent drop over night? I like the drop instead of the increase.

This is the time on Sprockets where we look at our finances and ask ourselves “what can I do to help myself get ahead…”

Seriously when the banks start failing, you know that happy days aren’t here again.. and that they’ll be gone for a while… Fuck. 118 years after you started out being a local Seattle bank, you fucked up big time and the government said no more? Jesus, over inflated ego much?

I guess now that I’m 30, I should wake up and pay attention to finances and politics… eew.

Starbucks is closing 600 stores.
Darn, 600 less places to get awful coffee that doesn’t taste burnt. Sadly, they aren’t closing to many in the general Seattle area. One of the ones they are closing near me just opened, May to be exact.

I feel bad for those 600 managers now without jobs?

Your plan of 10,000 stores by 2010 totally worked, but you got of little over zealous and looked what happened.

My issues with people and their food buying habits.

leave a comment »

There was on article on the front page of the Seattle Times yesterday that talked about ways to save money on your grocery bill. I wanted to link to it and rip it to shreds but now I can’t seem to find it. I fail at internets?

Any way, one of the things they suggested was stop buying ready made cookie dough. Also, eat breakfast for a dinner meal one night a week. Put a lazy susan in your cupboard. Jesus christ, this shit was on the front page of the paper!? No news? Slow Tuesday? Um, I could think of lots of things they didn’t use that would help you save money on food.

The number one way to save money on food is: Eat serving sizes. Don’t be a piglet.

And since I work in the grocery/natural food industry I can speak on this one… Buy food. Don’t buy shit from the deli. Don’t buy frozen meals. We buy big staples at Costco and Trader Joe’s. We make 95% of our food from scratch. I buy stuff in bulk. I eat salad at least one meal, 5 times a week, and I take it with me. Buy what you need, not what you might later use or eat. Convenience is really nice, but puts a huge dent in funds. Seriously, if you buy a pound of mashed potatoes from the deli for $7, you don’t really have the right to tell me how expensive food is.

And, magazines. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE MAGAZINES. But, at $5 a pop for the ones I like, I’ve scaled back. $10 for 2? Shit, you could have bought 3 pounds of celery!

And for the love of god, are you wackos still spending $5 on fluffy lattes with soy milk and syrup and extra decaf shots? 5 times a week? I splurge once a week and buy a coffee, it’s also under $4. But I make a lot of plain black coffee at home and drink plain black coffee at work. And if you are like my mom and don’t like the taste of coffee, why are you spending money on Frappuccinos?

I really hope that more people will figure this all our and get back to basics. I suppose this is all a huge deal to me because I hear about it so often and I’m so trying to figure out how to manage my money better so I can buy a house. I’m also watching what and how I eat so I can lose weight for all sorts of various health reasons and money saving options.

I’d rather spend $13 on my massage co-pay than pay $13 or some gourmet macaroni and cheese from Beechers.

The end.

Money crunch.

I gave my grandpa a massage today, and he paid me $60.

$10.89 – Madonna’s new CD
$2.20 – Drip coffee and Seattle Times
$44.00 – one full tank of gas. OUCH! I drive a small Honda Civic.
_____________
$57.09

I bought my grandpa a birthday card before I went to his house and it was about $2.99. That was a $60 spent quick.

Wow, apparently $60 doesn’t go as far as it used to?
I could have bought a new pair of DKNY jeans like I thought about but the gas tank needed filling today or tomorrow, so I did it.

Thank you jesus for a 12 mile round trip commute instead of the old one I used to make that was 60.
